Wise Woman of the month
Wise Women was established, in 1994, to provide Personal Safety courses to women in Glasgow. At that time there was a network of women's personal safety groups across Glasgow, but it didn't start there.

In the early 20th Century Edith Garrud taught the Suffragettes martial arts.

The first female martial arts instructor in Britain, Edith practiced Jujutsu and was committed to training women self defence and in 1909 her jujutsu was named the "new terror of the police" in Health and Strength magazine.
Edith had twice weekly sessions, training the Women's Social and Political Union and created a all-woman protection until known as the Bodyguard for the movement.

We truly stand on the shoulders of giants.

Wise Women are honoured to have had a song written for us, for our 30th Anniversary, by the wonderful Esther Sparks.
This song, "Her Voice", encapsulates the aim of Wise Women beautifully, emphasising the connections between women and their experiences.
