I was recently asked what music meant to me, it took me a while to think about the question. Music to me is everything I live and breathe music. Music has always been such a huge part of my life from as long as I can remember. Music is my lifeline. It can be some people’s only lifeline to keep them going in this world. I came across this quote “I don’t know if music can change the world overnight but I know that music can help someone make it through a difficult night.” And it is so true music can save us in more ways than we will ever truly know.
It had me thinking about how music impacts my life. Music has no prejudice, no judgement, and no rules! It’s always there. You never need to call up for it. It’s easy accessible at any time day or night. You don’t need to ask anyone to use it, to seek it out, seek approval it’s your own personal choice. It’s like a therapist, only you don’t need to talk to anyone about what is going on you just need to listen, feel it and let it out.
Music has such a powerful way to enable us to express/channel our emotions/ feelings/ thoughts/ life struggles. There is a song for every emotion you go through, you instantly connect with it. It can hit that spot that no one else can. It also helps us to understand ourselves and what we are dealing with at times, it can help us put it into perspective which is pretty amazing that a 4 minute song can have such an impact!
Music has been around for as long as we can remember. It might have changed throughout the years but one thing that has always remained and that’s the connection we have towards it. You can listen to a song and you can feel instantly connected to it, it can be for different reasons, like you can relate to the lyrics, the meaning behind the song, or the melody or all of the above.
I literally have a playlist for everything, my music taste is very varied, I like anything from the 50s right through to current day music. Pretty much a handful of songs from each category and I love it! I have playlist for everything! doing my housework (which I have the deepest of sympathy to my neighbour’s between my music choice and me belting them out with my unique vocals lol!) I have one for going for a bath, one for if I’m needing motivation, I have one that is full of powerful song, one full of meaningful songs. One I have named my fight songs (this is for when I feel I have lost my fight in my journey, I play this playlist and before I know it my fire has been relit again and I’m ready to conqueror!). I also have my playlist full of sad and depressing songs, I have them because sometimes we just need to have a good cry, and that’s ok, I have few songs that I listen to and because I can relate so much to them they overwhelm me with emotions and I just let it all out and then I feel better it’s great therapy!.
Music doesn’t always need to be upbeat and cheery! Because life isn’t always good, so like life you have to go through the ups and downs of life, music has your back with that. You are never alone with music. That is the beauty of music, lyrics, melody’s is they give you a sense of comfort even in your darkest or unsettling moments you can always find peace with music.
Wise Women have uploaded to Twitter some of my suggestions for music that I personally feel have a powerful, inspirational and some emotional connection to. I hope you can relate to them in some way.
Remember you’re never alone! It’s ok to not be ok, there is nothing to be ashamed of if you’re struggling. If you are feeling a little overwhelmed or just out of sorts and don’t feel able to or ready to reach out and speak to someone but feel able to give one of the song suggestions a go, there’s nothing to lose only gain J
Stay well, Stay Safe.
